GERD. What is it and what can help.

The common belief is that acid reflux or heartburn is caused by too much stomach acid but that’s not the case. GERD or Gastro Intestinal Reflux Disease is when there is inflammation of the stomach and it leads to tissue damage of the esophagus. Exactly put, GERD is symptoms of mucosal damage produced by abnormal reflux of gastric contents into the esophagus. (dr axe) or dysfunction of the muscular valve called the Lower Esophageal Sphincter (LES) that separates the lower end of the esophagus and the stomach. The esophagus has no protection against acid and that is what people are feeling when they have heartburn or acid reflux.  If these symptoms are left untreated it can lead to esophageal cancer, ulcers or Barrett’s Esophagus.

Causes of GERD:

  1. Too LITTLE hydrochloric acid (hcl) or also called stomach acid which is necessary for digestion and absorption of carbohydrates. When you have very low hcl your body cant digest these foods causing bloating, bacteria overgrowth, no production of pancreatic enzyme which will cause your stomach pH to rise causing bacteria overgrowth.
  2. poor gut health, mainly Leaky Gut Syndrome. I’m sure you have heard that term more than once. Leaky Gut is when the lining of your intestines have developed holes in them that now allow food particles that are meant to just be in your gut, to leak out into your blood stream causing inflammation in your body.
  3. Poor diet that is high in consumption of too much caffeine, processed foods and sugars.


So many people turn to Antacids or acid prohibiting drugs like tums, Prilosec and others because they cause your stomach to STOP producing hcl (good stuff) therefore causing bacteria overgrowth, inflammation of the stomach lining, polyps of the intestines etc.

I’ve been there, I had a bout of chronic GERD and it is misery to say the least. The cause of mine was low HCL, hormonal imbalance and candida. When you have low stomach acid, bacteria can survive and cause an imbalance of bad/good bacteria in you gut which is called candida. In turn, candida over time will cause leaky gut (holes in your gut) that lead to autoimmunity and in your case heartburn. Here are a bunch of great supplements that I have used and have helped me:

Who uses those typical Banana Boat spray sunscreens?Please protect yourself and  children by not using chemical sunscreens.
The most common sunscreens on the market contain chemical filters. These products typically include a combination of two to six of these active ingredients:

Clean Teeth. Non-Toxic Brush.

Happy Saturday! I hope you all have fun plans for the weekend! This morning I wanted to share a tip with you to powerfully clean you toothbrushes AND possibly get you to use more greener, non-toxic ones in the process!

We brush our teeth at least twice per day but how often do we remember to clean our brushes. Brushes  are susceptible to bacteria, mold and not to mention little “critters” (nasty, gross!) Cleaning them by soaking is a weekly must to be sure they are not spreading more germs in our mouths.

Heres what I do and I’ll share various options for you:

Get a clean glass jar, fill it with purified water 3/4 from top


  1. 1 tbsp of ACV (apple cider vinegar) (make sure its not white vinegar) and a few drops of clove essential oil. This NOW brand is a great bang for your buck, I always use this brand especially for cleaning.

  2. 1 tbsp baking soda (aluminum free) and a few drops of essential oil. Some great essential oil options: orange, lemon, peppermint, tea tree, clove, grapefruit. See HERE for many oil options.

Let your brushes sit for at least a few hours then rinse very good. Essential oils are strong and you don’t want them aggravating your mouth next time you brush so rinse them well!

As for these great  ECO-friendly, BPA-free BAMBOO brushes, aren’t they awesome! They are also perfect for kids because they are not too soft or too hard and very gentle on teeth and gums.
