So last night I had to take my younger son (9) to the ER.  On Saturday he had a low grade fever that started in the morning. He had a long day on a field trip the day before, was cold and got home at 10:30pm at night so I figured he just caught a little cold. His fever went away that day, naturally.  I never give any fever reducers, just herbs, vitamins and essential oils. The next day, Sunday, he still said he wasn’t feeling good but no fever. He just wasn’t himself.  Yesterday he was fine, no fever etc. he played and ate as normal. Later that night he complained again about his stomach being sore and being crampy and gassy.  I just figured its a stomach virus or something he ate.  Then right as he was going to sleep he complained it was freezing and usually he’s the one that is always hot at night and wants the air conditioner on. I felt him and he felt really hot. He seemed to spike a fever again.  If you know me, I am not at the Dr. a lot, hardly ever. I will do anything I can before taking my children to the Dr.  But I know appendicitis is common and it can be fatal if it bursts. I looked up all the classic symptoms of appendicitis and he had most of them and  the fever made me worried the most. He wasn’t in major pain, but usually that is how it starts off. It can be a dull pain then over a 8-12 hour period, it can worsen. I didn’t want to take the chance and knew I couldn’t sleep, so we took him in to check.

When the Dr. did a physical exam he felt his stomach and lower abdomen and asked if there was any pain. My son said no and when he got to the ER he did not have a fever. He explained that usually the pain will move over to the lower right abdomen, still have a fever and be very uncomfortable. The only test that is pretty accurate would be a CT scan which is very high in radiation and because he felt it was unlikely, he suggested not to do it. In any other situation I would not have taken him in, but because he has been telling me that his stomach has been sore off and on the past month or so, made me think maybe it was it. So after all that, we were able to leave, his stomach was still crampy but no major pain, especially in the lower right area.  I will continue to give him antibacterial herbs and enzymes for his stomach.

I wanted to share this so that if you every experience something similar, please do not hesitate to take your child in to check it especially if they have a fever and the pain is located on the lower right abdomen and is tender and sore to touch.  Many parents mistake appendicitis for a stomach virus and sometimes it’s too late. Kids have a high tolerance for pain and my not always know how to describe how they feel. I always ask my son “where is it sore?” So I urge you to just be super observant of your child in that area and look for fever, pain, vomiting, nausea and diarrhea.  Below I give you a brief write up about appendicitis and what it is and common symptoms to look for.

Appendicitis is an inflammation of the appendix organ located at the bottom right area of your abdomen. This is a very common condition in many younger children, but can happen to anyone at anytime.

The appendix is a 31/2 inch tube shaped sack that is connected to the large intestine (see my picture below). It may be used to produce and protect beneficial probiotic colonies in the digestive system.  The appendix at first was looked at as an organ unnecessary which to me is crazy because God created us and if any organ was unnecessary He would not have place it in our bodies! So with that being said, the appendix has been studied and shown to play a big role in our immune systems. Lymph tissue forms in the appendix after birth. It has been known to serve as a reservoir of good bacteria.

Main cause of appendicitis is not clearly know, but here are some reasons what may cause the appendix to become inflamed and possibly rupture.

  1. When it becomes blocked by stool, a foreign body or cancer. Usually there is some type of infection and this causes the appendix to inflame.
  2. Parasite, fungal or viral infection can cause inflammation.
  3. blocking in the lining of the appendix

So as you can see it starts with some type of blockage, especially by stool.  It’s important to use the bathroom when you feel like you need to go. Many children hold in their stool because they are playing or busy or afraid to go out in public or school. I told my son to never do that and no matter where he is, if he has to go, go! When you hold back your stool, it can accumulate and cause bacterial build up, blockage, infection and appendicitis!

Here are some classic symptoms to look for in appendicitis:

  • Dull pain near the navel or the upper abdomen that becomes sharp as it moves to the lower right abdomen. This is usually the first sign.
  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea and/or vomiting soon after abdominal pain begins
  • Abdominal swelling
  • Fever of 99-102 degrees Fahrenheit
  • Inability to pass gas

The main symptom you want to look for is that the pain moves toward the lower right part of the abdomen and is accompanied by a fever.  If you have any feeling that it may be appendicitis, please dont ever hesitate, go in and check it!

Dangers of Energy Drinks

Advertising, marketing and bright bold colors on the cans or bottles are made to lure you in to these amazingly awesome energy drinks! But beware, nothing is ever as it seems.

So I’m here today to explain to you what exactly is in these mainstream energy drinks and how to read ingredients and more so know what affect they have on your body.

Red Bull, Monster and Rockstar are some of the popular brands of energy drinks out there today. Lets take a look at some of the main similar ingredients in these:

ROCKSTAR: 30+ grams

ROCKSTAR ZERO: 0g BUT it;s made with erythritol which is a FAKE chemical sugar worse for you than regular sugars

As you can see there is tons of sugar for a small can of drink.30 plus grams is alot, you shouldnt even consume that much sugar per day let alone on one drink, that’s my opinion. Sugar from fruits are different so that doesn’t apply there. SUGAR is on of the root causes of disease and chronic illnesses. Disease, candida, inflammation they all FEED off of sugar. Sugar is how these bacteria, fungus and viruses live. When you starve the body of sugar, they cannot survive.

CAFFEINE: these drinks contain way over the limit the body can handle for caffeine. Every body is different but these high amounts make your cortisol levels spike then immediately crash hurting your adrenals glands, bringing them to exhaustion and then your body creates a dependence on that cortisol spike to survive creating a cycle of inflammation.

HERBS: They look great listed as an ingredient right? But you have no idea or source of how they are grown or harvested so most likely they are sprayed with tons of chemicals.

CHEMICAL ADDITIVES AND DYES: you have to realized that the USDA (they careless about your health) does not require certain ingredients to be listed when in smaller amounts, but all health drinks contain dyes, that’s what makes certain ones certain colors, These dyes are not made for consumption, they act as allergies to the body. Other chemicals are added for taste and other factors that harm you also.

Studies have shown that energy drinks do not enhance athletic performance, they do not enhance cognitive performance either.  It’s really scary because mostly younger individuals are attracted to these drinks because they want to fit in and do what everyone else is doing, be accepted and follow along with the trend. But these drinks are harming kids as well as others who consume them.

So if the reason why you are consuming these energy drinks is truly to have more energy, here are some safer and natural options:

  1. strengthen your adrenal gland and thyroid gland by eating a diet free of gluten, and sugars and possibly lower or stop gluten consumption. When you strengthen your overall body, it helps with your energy levels. I take and recommend these two supplements to support your adrenal and thyroid gland. Adrenal Health by Gaia and Thyroid Support by Gaia.
  2. Stay away from processed sugars or too much of any sugar. Sugar will always weaken and halt your immune system
  3. Eat real foods- consuming whole foods preferably organic will fill and feed your cells which is what provide energy to your body.
  4. take a good vitamin B supplement. Vitamin B’s are necessary for cell function and provide O2 and energy production to each cell of your body. A great vitamin B complex is this one and also a great vegan B12 by GHC.
  5. Drink more water, dehydration will zap you of energy
  6. Sleep better, sleep, so simple, but it does a body good.
  7. Stay away from simple carbs like sugars and eat more complex carbs like sweet potatoes, yams and bananas.
  8. Do a full body detox regularly- once a year is preferred, I recommend twice. The best detoxes that I have used and only will use are from Global Healing Center. I recommend the Body Cleanse Starter Kit to start.

Hope this gives you some great info and insight on the dangers of energy drinks.

There’s one brand that is local made in Hawaii that you may want to try. It’s called GREEN and made with pure organic ingredients! Check them out.

It was tough to balance but I’ve been so blessed. Within those past years I’ve stamped close to 10,000 pieces that’s been shipped all over the world, crazy! This past year I put my biz on hold to do other things, but since Mothers and a Fathers Day is approaching I’ve decided to start it up again. The Adrenal/Thyroid Connection

When you thyroid is compromised, so are your adrenal glands and vice versa. Let’s start wit the thyroid gland. The thyroid gland is a small butterfly shaped gland that is located at the base of your neck below the Adams apple. Each lobe of your thyroid lies on either side of you windpipe. The function of your thyroid gland is to make, store and release thyroid hormones into your bloodstream. These hormones are called T3(liothyronine) and T4(levothyroxine) which affect every single cell of your body. Too little thyroid hormones slows your body down and its called hyPOthyroidism and too much hormones produces speed your body up and its called hyPERthyroidism.  The amount of hormones made in your thyroid are controlled another gland in your brain called the PITUATARY gland which is also helped by your hypothalamus. You see how all these parts of your body need help functioning from each other? It’s amazing how God created each part of us to depend on one another. Problems with the thyroid gland can be caused by nodules which are structural or function problems. Both can be caused by a diet consisting of processed foods, sugars and chemicals, toxicity of the body or deficiency or lack of necessary vitamins and minerals necessary to function.

Your adrenal glands are also necessary for proper thyroid function and like I mentioned before, they go hand in hand. Your adrenal glands are no bigger than a walnut and are located above each kidney. “AD” means over and  “RENAL” means kidney.  Their function is to secrete cortisol (sress hormone), estrogen and testosterone. These glands will regulate every function in your body and also most importantly how you feel and how your body responds to stress.

Some symptoms but not limited to adrenal fatigue and thyroid problems are these:

  • body aches
  • trouble concentrating
  • racing thoughts
  • moodiness and irritability
  • feeling overwhelmed
  • hormone imbalance
  • cravings for sweet and salty foods
  • pain
  • autoimmunity
  • chronic illness
  • cold hands and feet
  • weight gain or rapid weight loss
  • hair loss
  • always tired or so fatigue
